ROME, GA – Floyd County Emergency Management Agency brought home three awards from the Emergency Management Association of Georgia (EMAG) Conference, including Volunteer/Citizen of the Year, Emergency Management Agency of the Year and the Marguerite Brock Rescue Award.

“We are extremely proud of these awards,” said Scotty Hancock, EMA Director. “We’ve known we’ve had some of the best volunteers that put in lots of hours for our organization. They are so passionate about what they do and these awards solidify their level of dedication. Without our volunteers, our organization would not be what it is today.”

"I commend Floyd County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) for their outstanding efforts locally, regionally and statewide. They do an excellent job protecting the citizens of Floyd County and neighboring counties, as well. The Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) knows from experience that Scotty Hancock and his staff at Floyd County EMA are always willing to help wherever they are needed," said GEMA/Homeland Security Director Charley English.

Vicki Wiles was recognized as the Volunteer/Citizen of the Year. Wiles is the Community Emergency Response Team Coordinator. She logs about 240 hours annually all in the name of CERT. Wiles has been a volunteer with Floyd County EMA for 5 years. Wiles was nominated by Hancock for the award.

“Vickie has done a wonderful job coordinating our CERT program and assisting with Local Emergency Planning Committee,” said Hancock. “I can always count on her to get the job done right.”

The Floyd County EMA Rescue Squad was presented the Marguerite Brock Rescue Award for best all-around rescue program. The 48 member team participated in 21 emergency operations totaling 709 hours of rescue work. In addition to the rescue hours logged, the squad trained for 634hours in the past 12 months.

The pinnacle award came in the form of being named as Emergency Management Agency of the Year. The recipient must be in compliance and in good standing with GEMA, is a member of EMAG for at least two years and has to prove that a significant improvement or difference in their community has been made that will mitigate, respond to, or recover from a disaster.

"Floyd County EMA has demonstrated the importance of having a strong emergency management agency,” said Lanita Lloyd, incoming EMAG President.  “During 2010, Floyd's EMA has proven its capabilities by providing coordination and leadership during exercises and community preparedness events.  Floyd EMA has successfully fostered and maintained sustainable partnerships with other local, state, and federal agencies, non-governmental organizations, the business community, and private citizens as well. Floyd EMA deserves to be commended for their diligence and continued progress."
