JOB SUMMARY:

The purpose of this classification is to perform managerial/administrative work functions associated with directing activities and operations of the County prison and work release center.

MAJOR DUTIES:

This unclassified position reports directly to the County Manager. Supervises, directs and evaluates assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining and completing employee performance appraisals; interviews job applicants, conducts background checks, and hires new employees. Plans, directs, assigns, and coordinates operations and activities of the correctional institute; identifies staffing requirements; coordinates work schedules to ensure coverage on a twenty-four hour basis; organizes and prioritizes department workload; makes work assignments; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work. Ensures adherence to all directives, rules and regulations pertaining to the care, custody, and security of prisoners and County property; enforces correctional institution rules, regulations and procedures; maintains inmate discipline; maintains a secure and peaceful environment in the facility. Develops and implements departmental budget; monitors expenditures for fiscal compliance. Develops and implements departmental policies and procedures; writes post orders, emergency plans, local operating procedures and other policies and procedures. Consults with County Manager to review department operations, resolve problems, and receive advice/direction. Maintains contracts for inmate work detail with outlying Counties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s Degree in Public Administration, Criminal Justice, Constitutional Law or related field (Master’s Degree Preferred); supplemented by five (5) year(s) of progressively responsible supervisory experience in law enforcement and administration, preferably in a correctional facility; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Driver’s License. Must possess and maintain certification as a Peace Officer Standards and Training Basic Correctional Officer and Peace Officer. Must possess and maintain certifications in First Aid and CPR. Must be licensed and qualified to operate a firearm.

- INCENTIVE PAY: Certified Public Safety Employees are provided up to $1,500 additional compensation per year for completion of approved coursework from a regionally accredited college or university.
- LONGEVITY PAY: Pays 1, 2, or 3 percent of salary plus $50 per year depending on years of service.
