Work Week: M-F; 12pm – 9pm; 1hr lunch; FT w/benefits; Nonexempt
General Description:
Analyze mechanical problems and performing repairs, maintenance, body work, and painting of mainline, tripper, paratransit, and all other department vehicles. Checks all buses daily for sound and safe mechanical operations, for changing run cards, and for removing cash vaults from fare boxes. Diagnoses mechanical problems and performs corrective repairs and/or maintenance on all buses and other department vehicles. Repairs major breakdowns on all fleet vehicles; rebuilds and replace engines, transmissions, clutches, brakes, etc., as needed. Inspects, repairs, overhauls, and assembles automotive electric equipment such as generators, distributors, and starters. Performs field repairs, reassembles air compressors, pumps, and related equipment. Disassembles, repairs, reassembles air compressors, pumps, and related equipment. Performs preventative and corrective maintenance procedures on all department vehicles and small equipment on a monthly basis. Performs body repairs to buses, including painting, welding, cutting, and mixing paint. Fuels buses as needed. Records fare box and hubometer readings. Completes bus route sheets and occasionally opens transit shop. Secures shift at the end of the day. Maintains a clean work area; maintains assigned service vehicle. Responds to service calls in the field; remains on-call as required. Performs duties of a Bus Operator as needed. Work Experience Requirements:
•Thorough workings knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and techniques used in the inspection, maintenance, prevention and repair of a wide variety of heavy equipment and trucks; of electrical and air conditioning systems diagnostics and repair; of the mechanical operating principles of heavy vehicles that operates on gasoline and diesel engines and of mechanical repair of trucks and construction equipment to include brakes, suspension, and transmission fundamentals sufficient for performing safety inspection; familiar with all aspects of heavy equipment operation and must understand the functions of the major components and systems; competent at using service and maintenance tools and equipment, and be familiar with different lubricants and service parts specifically made for different makes of heavy equipment.
•Skill in diagnosing mechanical defects in heavy equipment and making necessary repairs; in the use and operation of tools and machinery used in heavy equipment repair such as hoists, lifts, presses, diesel engine analysis equipment, arc and gas welders, etc.; in reading and understanding factory manuals, drawings, and specifications; in safe operation of tools and equipment; in body repair, including painting and mixing paint; in operating power lifts, presses, hoist, torque wrenches, engine-diagnosis machine, and other tools and equipment; perform paint and body work on vehicles.
•Ability to follow instructions and respond to management direction; trouble-shoot and analyze when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong; communicate clear and effectively verbally and in writing.
•Ability to take responsibility for own actions and keep commitments; be self-motivated and able to work without constant direct supervision; detailed oriented and mentally alert; ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operation/maintenance instructions and procedure manuals; have good interpersonal skills and a willingness to continually learn and enhance skill sets.
Education Requirements:
•Possess HS diploma or G.E.D. equivalent with vocational training and two years’ experience in a heavy equipment shop or more than three to five years of experience. ASE certifications helpful.
•Possess and maintain a valid Georgia Driver’s license and have the ability to obtain a Class B CDL with Passenger Endorsement within twelve (12) months of being hired.
•Must obtain National Incident Management Systems (NIMS) 100 and 700 within three (3) months of employment.
