Works four 10/hr. days: M-F;7am–5:30pm

30 min lunch; Rotating off day; Full-time w/benefits; Non-Exempt

General Description:

Troubleshoots, inspects, maintains, prevents and repairs of heavy equipment problems and systems from its undercarriage to engines and electrical or computer systems to include a wide variety of heavy equipment and construction equipment. Performs routine inspection and maintenance and general overhaul and repair work on trucks, excavators, bulldozers, mowers, loaders, tractors and other heavy equipment at Public Works Garage. Assists the Landfill Department as needed to work on heavy equipment used in landfill operations. Inspects, adjusts, and replaces defective parts including steering clutches, final drives, hydraulic controls, and other related heavy equipment items. Repairs and overhauls brakes, ignition systems, transmissions, front and rear axle assemblies; repairs and installs hydraulic controls; tunes motors using standard testing equipment. Disassembles, repairs, reassembles air compressors, pumps and other related equipment. Inspects, repairs, overhauls and assembles automotive electric equipment such as generators, distributors and starters. Performs field repairs on heavy equipment and trucks as needed. Performs diagnostic and corrective mechanical maintenance on heavy equipment and trucks, including major work on diesel engines. Repairs diesel engines in large trucks and heavy equipment as well as two cycle and four cycle gasoline engines in mowers and other small equipment. Must perform welding and fabrication tasks on heavy buckets and cutting edges.  Essential job functions are not to be construed as a complete statement of all duties performed.  Employees will be required to perform other job related duties as assigned.

Work Experience Requirements:

•Thorough workings knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and techniques used in the inspection, maintenance, prevention and repair of a wide variety of heavy equipment and trucks.

•Knowledge of electrical and air conditioning systems diagnostics and repair; operating principles of heavy diesel engines and of mechanical repair of trucks and construction equipment; skill in diagnosing defects in heavy equipment and making necessary repairs; skill in the use and operation of tools and machinery used in heavy equipment repair such as hoists, lifts, presses, diesel engine analysis equipment, arc and gas welders, etc.

•Ability to follow instructions and respond to management direction; trouble-shoot and analyze when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong; communicate clear and effectively verbally and in writing.

•Must keep work area in a safe manner by keeping clean and neat at all times; ability to take responsibility for own actions and keep commitments. 

•Must be self-motivated and able to work without constant direct supervision; be detailed oriented and mentally alert.

•Must be able to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operation/maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.

Minimum Requirements:

•HS Diploma or G.E.D. with vocational training and two years’ experience in a heavy equipment shop.  ASE certifications helpful.

•Must possess or be able to obtain National Incident Management Systems (NIMS) 100 and 700 within three (3) months of employment.

•Must possess and maintain a valid Commercial Driver’s license in the state of residency.
