Work Schedule: M-F;8am–4:30pm; 30 min lunch; FT w/benefits; Nonexempt

Subject to call-in and overtime work; shift rotation during emergency conditions.

General Description:

Entry level position and is responsible for the physical labor involved in operating and maintaining the water and sewer system. This position is also involved in operating and maintaining  light to heavy equipment used to construct, set, install, repair, and service water and sewer lines. As an entry level position most tasks will be performed on the ground/manual labor and not necessarily in equipment.  Assists in setting meters and installing water/sewer pipes and associated fixtures. Repairs and services water main leaks and cleaning sewer mains and manholes. Operates dump truck (job site only without CDL) and trailers used in transporting rock, sand, trash, solid waste, gravel, pipe, manholes, etc. Operates dump truck, tractor, bobcat and other light construction equipment in maintaining the sewer collection system. Operates tractor used in cutting grass and underbrush. On occasion may operate other equipment used in maintenance and construction based on the incumbent’s skill level.  Assists in maintaining levies and right-of-ways. Cleans and maintains equipment and buildings as required. Work Experience Requirements:

•Knowledge of policies and procedures pertaining to maintenance and construction of water and sewer lines; construction principles; operate and perform minor maintenance on heavy equipment.

•Working knowledge of equipment such as: dump truck, tractor, bobcat, and other light construction equipment such as jack hammer, compactor, saw cutter, etc.

•Knowledge of underground utility locating methods.

•Skill in following verbal and written directions.

•Skill and ability to operate and maintain motor vehicles, tool, equipment and machinery in a safe and effective manner.

•Ability to read, write and perform basic math calculations; understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position; perform physical labor.

•Ability to work well with others and take directions from assigned supervisors.

Minimum Requirements:

•HS Diploma or GED equivalent with the ability to read, write and perform basic math calculations.

•Must be capable in the operation and maintenance of a vac/jet truck, backhoe, hydraulic tamping equipment, dump truck, tractor, bobcat, and other light construction equipment such as jack hammer, compactor, saw cutter, etc.

•Ability to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position and perform physical labor; perform work accurately, safely, and complete tasks in a timely manner.

•Possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License; in order to be eligible for promotion within Water & Sewer, must obtain and maintain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License; must complete a CSUS Course (Collections/Distribution).

•Must obtain National Incident Management Systems (NIMS) 100 and 700 within three (3) months of employment.
