Work Schedule: M-F; 8-5; 1hr lunch; Non-Exempt; FT w/benefits
General Description:
Position has multiple responsibilities that are necessary to permit the division to carry out its mission and to provide backup capabilities should an Inspector/Investigator be absent from duty due to illness, vacation, etc. May assist other Inspectors/Investigators or other department members assigned to assist with educational or other activities conducted by the division. Upon request, schedules and conducts home inspections in Rome and Floyd County. As directed, visit homes in Rome and Floyd County for the purpose of installing smoke alarms and or assisting occupants in the development of home escape plans. Schedules and conducts inspections of buildings and other facilities in Rome and Floyd County to seek or maintain compliance with local and state fire laws, ordinances, rules, regulations, codes and standards. Provide consultation services to owners/operators of buildings, businesses or facilities in Rome and Floyd County, or to architects, developers or contractors with regard to code compliance issues. Conduct or assist in the investigation of fires in Rome and Floyd County for the purpose of establishing the origin and cause. Performs plan reviews on new commercial construction, additions and renovations as well as fire protection systems. Attends seminars, symposiums, conferences and workshops for training/professional development. Essential job functions are not to be construed as a complete statement of all duties performed. Work Experience Requirements:
•Knowledge of basic principles of fire behavior, fire suppression, fire prevention, fire emergency planning, fire survival methods and techniques, and accident prevention.
•Knowledge of local and state fire safety laws, ordinances, rules, regulations, codes, and standards and their interpretation and proper application to various buildings, structures, facilities, and conditions.
•Basic knowledge of construction standards, guidelines and recommended practices as they relate to the protection of life and property from fire and its related hazards.
•Knowledge of the codes, standards, guides, and recommended standards of the National Fire Protection Association, and the fire related codes of the International Code Council with special regard to the International Fire Code, the International Building Code, and the International Mechanical Code.
•Knowledge and skill in interpersonal relations with diverse groups of people.
•Skill in public speaking and in communicating with various agencies, organizations or legal authorities.
•Skill in verbal and written communication.
•Basic knowledge of fire origin and cause determination, preservation of evidence where arson is determined or suspected, and necessary procedures in obtaining law enforcement investigative assistance.
•Skill in operating equipment used in connection with educational programs, inspections, or investigations (e.g., VCR, projectors, gas detector, camera, tape recorder, etc.)
Education Requirements:
•Must obtain the required state certifications within twelve months of starting the position.
•Must obtain and maintain a valid driver’s license of sufficient class to allow for the operation of an emergency vehicle in the state of residence.
