Work Schedule: M-F; 8-5; 1hr lunch; Non-Exempt; FT w/benefits
General Description:
Facilitates and designs community-based fire and life safety classes for the community to include the general public, schools, churches, business groups, clubs, and others; using risk reduction programs and partnerships in accordance with the policies, procedures and guidelines of the department. Plans, researches, designs, develop, prepare and present specialized fire and life safety education curriculum and training. Assists with the development of programs or program outlines. Prepares visual aids, posters, and other materials; implements specialized educational tools, equipment, and props to enhance program delivery. Conducts classes for presentation to students in the schools of Rome and Floyd County. Conducts special educational or training programs for employees of health care facilities, educational facilities, industrial plants or other occupancies in Rome and Floyd County. Supervises department members assigned to assist with educational or other activities conducted by the division. Assists in the periodic evaluation of educational programs and the review of course content for the purpose of identifying areas needing improvement based on local fire and emergency response statistics for Rome and Floyd County. Upon request, visit homes in Rome and Floyd County for the purpose of installing smoke alarms and or assisting occupants in the development of home escape plans and general fire safety inspections. Designs and sets up educational displays in public areas such as malls, schools and fairs. Maintains an inventory of educational aids and related equipment. As necessary, attends seminars, symposiums, conferences and workshops for professional development. Assists in maintaining accurate records of contact information for the education program and annual scheduling for prevention programs. Provides basic customer assistance in explaining service and answering questions and concerns, tours, and processes requests for educational programs. Work Experience Requirements:
Knowledge of the basic principles of fire behavior, fire suppression, fire prevention, fire emergency planning, fire survival methods and techniques, and accident prevention; local and state fire safety laws, ordinances, rules, regulations, codes, standards; their interpretation and proper application to various buildings, structures, facilities, and conditions; basic knowledge of construction standards, guidelines and recommended practices as they relate to the protection of life and property from fire and its related hazards.
Knowledge and skill in interpersonal relations customer service delivery with diverse groups of people; skills in planning, scheduling, and prioritizing; designing educational curriculum for all age groups; strong verbal and written communication skills to include presentation skills with various agencies, organizations or legal authorities.
Skill in operating equipment used in connection with educational programs (e.g., electronic equipment, educational props and simulators).
General computer and software knowledge sufficient for electronic communications and maintenance of fire education contacts, schedules and general program management; demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft applications including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Education Requirements:
HS Diploma or GED equivalent with instructor’s experience in a classroom setting.
Must obtain and maintain a valid driver’s license in the state of residency.
