Water and Sewer
The mission of the City of Rome Water and Sewer Division is to provide safe, aesthetically pleasing drinking water to the public and to properly operate the sewage collection systems transporting sewage to one of Rome's two wastewater treatment plants for processing. One hundred fifteen women and men are employed by the City to accomplish this mission.
The Bruce Hamler Water Treatment Facility is located on Blossom Hill and receives river water from the Oostanaula and Etowah Rivers. The Facility has a treatment capacity of 18 million gallons per day and is currently treating an annual average of 9 million gallons per day. Initial treatment involves conventional coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation and filtration. Other treatment includes chlorination, fluoridation, and corrosion control.
The water distribution system is comprised of 285 miles of water mains, 15 storage tanks, 14 pumping stations, and 19,800 metered services. Water meters are automatically read each month utilizing radio transmissions from each meter.
The City is responsible for the sewage collection systems in both the City and unincorporated areas of Floyd County. The two collection systems serving Rome and Floyd County transport spent waters to the primary treatment plant on Blacks Bluff Road and to the smaller plant located on Ausburn Road. These two collection systems consist of 400 miles of sewer mains and 45 sewage pumping stations.
Capacity of treatment at the Rome Wastewater Treatment Plant is 36 million gallons per day. The Coosa Wastewater Treatment Plant has a daily capacity of 2 million gallons. Each plant treats wastewater to secondary levels as required by state and federal National Pollution Elimination Discharge System permits.
In addition to potable water and wastewater responsibilities, the Water and Sewer Division is also charged with the proper operation of the levee system's flood water pumping stations. Five such stations are located along the levee system.
