Teacher Education
Project WET
Project WET (Water Education for Teachers) is an innovative program for teachers to learn how to incorporate activities focused on water and the environment into all subject areas. The Project WET Curriculum and Activity Guide for kindergarten through twelfth grade is provided to educators (formal and non-formal) who attend a 10-hour training workshop and become certified Project WET teachers.
Adopt-A-Stream
Become a certified Adopt-A-Stream monitor and learn how to bring water monitoring activites into the classroom at an Adopt-A-Stream workshop. Training and supplies for chemical, biological, and bacterial monitoring are available at the ECO Center.
Grade School Programs
Roman Holiday Boat Tours
Short river tours may be added to any program. These boat tours provide a unique opportunity for students to experience the rivers of Rome as well as programs at the ECO Center. Full two-hour river tours from Ridge Ferry to Lock and Dam are also available. These tours provide a more in-depth experience of the river.
Kindergarten
Who Lives Here? GPS SKL1/SKL2
Students will learn about animals that live in northwest GA and find examples of them and their natural environments. Participants will learn about and experience different habitats (rivers, lakes, streams, wetlands, and uplands; wet and dry homes; rocky, sandy and vegetated areas, etc.) and match various animal babies with their parents in these habitats.
1st Grade
Meet the Wetlands GPS S1L1a/b/c/d
Students will learn about the basic needs of living things by visiting the wetlands at Ridge Ferry Park. Wetlands bring together many different habitats, and provide nutrients and shelter for many plants and animals. This makes the wetlands an ideal place to discuss these concepts while experiencing a unique environemnt in a safe, controlled setting. Students will also have the opportunity to dissect a wetland plant to learn about plant anatomy, and see a variety of animals in the aquaria at the ECO Center.
2nd Grade
Life Cycles GPS S2L1/S2E3a
Students will learn about the life cycles of animals common in Northwest Georgia including mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles, and insects. They will also learn about how changes in one part of the ecosystem caused by weather, plants, animals, or humans can lead to changes in other parts.
3rd Grade
Enviroscape! GPS S3L2
Students will investigate the difference between point source and non-point source pollution using a model landscape. A spray-bottle rainstorm shows the negative effects people can have on the watershed when we do not consider the side-effects of our actions. Students learn about potential problems and their respective solutions.
Habitats GPS S3L1a/b/c/d
Students will be exposed to the different major habitats in Georgia, and then visit several different local habitats around the ECO Center including wetlands, grasslands, forests, rivers and streams. The students will also follow a raindrop to see how the water flowing through Rome ends up in the Gulf of Mexico.
4th Grade
Food Web GPS S4L1
Students will learn all about the roles of producers, consumers, and decomposers in a variety of ecosystems through games and activities in and around the ECO Center. Students will experience first-hand how changes in the environment affect different organisms in different ways over time.
Survival! GPS S4L2a/b
Students will observe a variety of animals and identify features that help them thrive in their respective habitats. They will also learn how both slow and rapid changes to a habitat can lead to the decline and even extinction of some organisms, and how changes in the Coosa River Basin have impacted local plants and animals.
5th Grade
Earth Science - Go with the Flow GPS S5E1b/c
Students will investigate constructive and destructive processes using a stream table with flowing water and sand. This model allows students to experiment with different flow rates and variables to see how rivers and streams naturally change course and move their channels, and how human activities can have a great effect on these natural processes.
It's Classified GPS S5L1
Students will understand how animals are sorted into groups (vertebrates and invertebrates) and how vertebrates are sorted into sub groups. Using animals in and around the ECO Center, students will also learn how observing animal populations can tell us a lot about the health of the environment in the area.
Cells GPS S5L3a/b
Using microscopes, students will observe and identify the parts of plant and animal cells and determine the function of each part.
6th Grade
Water Wonders GPS S6E3
Students will investigate the properties of water and how these properties influence earth's water supply. Students will also investigate the distribution of earth's water and how water is recycled through the water cycle.
