General Description

This position is responsible for assisting the Training Chief with planning, coordinating, and implementing procedures for the training of Fire Department personnel.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must have completed with a grade of “C” or better forty-five (45) semester hours of non-remedial coursework from an accredited post high school educational institution or 600 hours in verified training. Training hours must be for training in addition to those required for State Firefighters certification or recertification, EMT recertification, or other. Included in the education courses taken should be courses associated with the use of math skills, written and verbal communication skills, interpersonal skills, leadership skills, and supervisory skills. Must possess or obtain and maintain all requirements and certifications of the Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Council, the City of Rome, and the Rome Fire Department.
  • Must possess or obtain certification as a Georgia Certified Firefighter, Level II EMS Instructor and CPR Instructor within 12 months of promotion or hire.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license in state of residency and possess or obtain license of sufficient class to allow for the operation of an emergency vehicle.
  • Possess or obtain and maintain certification at the Hazardous Materials Operation Level and in the National Incident Management System (NIMS) levels 100, 200, 700, and 800 certifications (level 300 must be obtained when available).
  • Must possess current State of Georgia Paramedic License.

Internal Candidate

  • Must have served in current position two years following the successful completion of probationary period required for a Sergeant. 
  • Must not currently be on probation.
  • Be in good standing with the department with regards to assigned or expected job duties and under no documented restrictions with regard to the performance of their duties at the time of application and continuing through the promotion process.

External Candidate

  • If not a Georgia Certified Firefighter, must meet minimum Firefighter qualifications as well as job posting qualifications. See below

Firefighter Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years of age before the completion of Rookie School.
  • Must be a citizen of the United States. 
  • Possess HS Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License in the state of residency, and not have been convicted of a DUI in the last three (3) years and/or have more than 15 points against driver’s license record.
  • Successfully pass a general aptitude test; Georgia Certified Firefighters are exempt contingent upon proof of a State of Georgia Firefighter Certification Certificate.
  • Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the National Fire Protection Association and the Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Act.
  • Comply with all current State of Georgia Firefighters Standards and Training requirements.
  • Must not have been convicted of a felony in the past 10 years (from the date of conviction) or sufficient misdemeanors as to constitute a disregard for the law.
  • Not be colorblind.
  • Have vision correctable to 20/20 pursuant to visual acuity standards.
  • Must not have been dishonorably discharged from any branch of military service.
