Residential
Residential Waste Collection
Residential garbage is collected once each week (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, or Friday) at curbside using seven rear-loading garbage trucks. Each truck has a crew consisting of a driver and two laborers. Garbage is hand loaded into the trucks. Rear loader trucks are also responsible for picking up dead animals, and small junk items.
The residential trucks travel approximately 75,000 miles per year collecting 8,461 tons of garbage. These trucks service approximately 11,700 households on sixteen garbage routes within the City. Garbage is taken to the Walker Mountain Landfill.
Large Items - Appliances
Trash collection is performed by seven trucks equipped with mechanical loaders which pull trailers with a 20 cubic yard capacity. Five shuttle trucks are equipped with special trailer dumping devices. Trash consisting of old furniture and appliances (except appliances that contain or has contained freon) and other broken or worn out articles are loaded into the trailers and then transported to the Walker Mountain Landfill by the shuttle trucks.
**Small trash items may be placed out with your household garbage. Yard trimming, or waste, are collected and taken to a separate collection site for grinding and composting.
Yard Waste
During leaf season, leaves are either taken to their own composting sites, or taken to the mulching site. All items must be separated at curb in order for the department to collect and transport to the appropriate location. Yard debris is stock piled, then chipped and is available to the public for mulch on Thursday and Friday.
Collection Vehicles
During a year's time, the trash trucks will travel over 36,000 miles to give the citizens of Rome weekly trash and yard waste removal. Trash and yard waste collected by the City in 2001 amounted to 9,711 tons. Solid Waste trucks assist other City departments (Electrical, Water & Sewer, Street, etc.) in disposing of tree trimming and clearing debris resulting from their operations.
